Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese multinational with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. The corporation has a range of companies under its hood with areas of interest in infrastructure, consumer products, electronic devices and components. Toshiba is primarily known as one of the best semiconductor makers in the world. Apart from that, Toshiba is world's fifth largest PC maker only after HP, Acer, Dell and Lenovo.
Toshiba was founded as a merger of two companies back in 1939. The merger of Shibaura Seisakusho and Tokyo Denki created a new company called Tokyo Shibaura Denki (Tokyo Shibaura Electric). In recent times the company came under fire in Britain for moving their production unit from Plymouth, UK to Poland in 2009. That resulted in a job loss of 270 employees.
Toshiba was one of the first companies that backed the HD DVD. But with the increasing popularity if Blu-Ray, they discontinued their support for HD DVD and stopped the production of relevant appliances in 2008.
