SAGEM was a major French company until it combined with SNECMA to become SAFRAN in year 2005. SAGEM Communication emerged as a communications subsidiary of SAFRAN. SAGEM is acronym for Société d’Applications Générales de l’Électricité et de la Mécanique, which means Company of General Applications of Electricity and Mechanics. The company was a major player in defence, consumer and communications systems.

A young man named Marcel Mome incorporated SAGEM in 1925 in Paris. When he founded SAGEM he aimed at producing mechanical devices. Initial devices were electrical components, power distributors, cameras, projectors and military gadgets. After 1942, SAGEM researched and developed a communication system at the request of French Ministry of Telecommunications. The system was one of the first telex printers.

Sagem is now currently placed at the third spot in France within the electronics, defence, and security market. With a VC funding they have now ventured into Sagem Wireless in 2009.
