O2O2 Mobile Phones

O2 is officially called Telefonica Europe Plc, and is a European telecom organization offering fixed and mobile solutions. Originally the company has roots in British Telecom before the privatization. The company was renamed BT Cellnet in 1999 as part of the BT telecom's BT Wireless family.

In the late 1990s BT Telecom's demerger resulted in various fractions of the company - BT cellnet became O2 UK; Esat Digifone became O2 Ireland; Viag Interkom became O2 Germany; Telfort became O2 Netherlands; Genie Internet got split into O2 Online and O2 Asia. On 23rd Jan 2006 Telefonica of Spain acquired the O2 GROUP for £17.7 billion. The takeover at that time was termed one of the biggest all-cash deals in the history of telecomm industry. O2 UK has the largest market share in UK with 28% topping Vodafone's 25%.

As part of their branding drive Telefonica O2 has been associated with various sports. They are official sponsors of Irish and English Rugby team. O2 also sponsors Arsenal FC. In 2005 the group bought the name rights of Millennium Dome and redeveloped as The O2.
