Nokia's history dates back to 1865, founded by mining engineer Fredrik Idestam who initially established a groundwood pulp mill in Tampere. The name Nokia comes from the town of Nokia, which originates from the river Nokianvirta, which flows through that town.
Nokia is one of the major players in developing the GSM, which is a second-generation mobile technology to carry both data and voice traffic. GSM was officially adopted as the standard for digital mobile technology in Europe in 1987.
